Good Habits Start in the Grocery Store!

  1. Plan your meals for the week! In a society as busy as ours, this can be easier said than done, so start small! Try planning just lunches for the week instead of every meal. This will help you to buy only what you need and will decrease the risk of having wasted leftovers.
  2. Make a list! This is an easy way to take control of the amount of food that you buy. By having a list that keeps you accountable, you will be less likely to impulse shop and will only buy the things you need.
  3. Buy “ugly produce.” A large quantity of produce is thrown away because it does not look ideal, even though it is often fine to eat. Don’t be deterred by the funny looking produce because buying it helps control the amount that is thrown away and wasted.
  4. Discover the bulk bins! Many grocery stores have a bulk bins section where you can buy only what you need. These range from trail mix, to grains, to spices, and often have many other things as well! By using these, not only will you reduce waste but you are likely to save money as well!
