While Meg and Jeff have been a part of the City Fruit team for some time now, we thought we’d take the opportunity to give them a proper introduction. Follow along below to learn more about their City Fruit journeys!
Meet Meg Sherry (she/her)
Meg has been a part of the City Fruit team since July 2024.
- Why did you decide to join City Fruit?
I decided to join City Fruit after 3 years in production tree care. Everything from Japanese Maples to Giant Sequoias. While embracing independent work and my interest in fine pruning, I wanted to explore a specialized side of the arboriculture field that wasn’t all for profit. It is a place where I feel my values and skill set found home and company.
2. What occupies your time outside of work?
Outside of work I am with my puppy Igby! She even makes the occasional appearance dragging branches on dog-friendly job-sites. She is a tri-color rough Collie, a Lassie dog. We also go on adventures foraging, hiking and recreational tree climbing. I’m also huge on musical literacy and spend quite a bit of time listening and analyzing different tunes.
3. What’s your favorite fruit?
My favorite fruit trees to admire are probably persimmons. The tastiest fruit that I’ve had the pleasure of harvesting is probably the hardy Kiwi, though it’s my least favorite to prune!
Meet Jeff Oliver (he/him)
Jeff has been a part of the City Fruit team since Summer 2022.
- Why did you decide to join City Fruit?
I joined mainly because I have a passion for urban agriculture! I felt like this was a way to really get my feet wet and see what it’s all about. The second biggest reason is that I really like what City Fruit does. Since I started out as a student, I thought it would be a great way for me to both get some experience with all kinds of different fruit tree varieties and do something useful for the community.
2. What occupies your time outside of work?
The two biggest things that I enjoy are live music and stand up comedy! If I’m not out in a garden or in the woods, I like to be consuming some sort of art in community. For music, I’m a big fan of local Fremont venues like Hi-Dive and Nectar Lounge and for comedy, I’ve been going to Laughs Comedy Club in the U District.
3. What’s your favorite fruit?
To eat, it would probably be all kinds of berries. For tree care, I really enjoy working on stone fruit trees. I grew up with them in my yard so I have an affinity for them. They’re also my favorite because we only prune them in the summer and I far prefer pruning in warm weather.
