Types of fruit grown within this orchard: Apple. Development of a new orchard at Troll’s Knoll will bring new fruit to the P-Patch in spring of 2023!
Background and history:
“In 2015, Fremont welcomed this P-Patch community garden and park space. The Troll’s Knoll P-Patch is situated on the northwest side of the Aurora Avenue Bridge, flanking the west side of the Fremont Troll. Currently, it has 31 garden plots, including three Giving Garden plots for food bank donation.
“This garden exists thanks to the 2008 Parks Levy Opportunity Fund and was developed with the support of volunteers, a City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Matching Fund grant, Skanska, and Perkins & Will” (Troll’s Knoll, 2022).
In 2022, the Troll’s Knoll P-Patchers and City Fruit started planning for the development of a new orchard! The new saplings will be planted behind the P-Patch shed, along the alley and the accessibility ramp, in the spring of 2023! On Tuesday, November 15th, City Fruit and a group of six volunteers from the Fremont Salesforce branch cleared weedy brush and Himalayan blackberry and sheet mulched the site with cardboard and Zoo Doo. City Fruit staff followed up the event by spreading a layer of wood chip mulch. This was the first crucial step in preparing the space for the orchard planting in the spring!
